Abstract

The relationship between technology and sport has deep historical roots, with innovations such as the ancient Greek discus demonstrating early advancements in sports engineering. This study explores the multifaceted impact of technology on modern athletics, categorizing its influence into direct and indirect applications. The introduction highlights the indispensability of technology for ensuring safety, fairness, and performance measurement, while the knowledge gap focuses on unequal access to technological resources among athletes from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Using a qualitative approach, this research analyzes existing literature, case studies, and expert interviews to examine technological disparities and their implications for fair competition.

Findings reveal significant advancements in performance-enhancing technologies and their ethical considerations, particularly in disabled sports and high-altitude training aids. Results indicate that while technological regulation is theoretically possible, practical implementation remains challenging due to the rapid pace of innovation and varying ethical standards across countries. The study underscores the necessity for governing bodies like the IAAF and the IOC to intensify efforts in levelling the technological playing field.

Implications of this research suggest that equitable access to advanced training technologies and education is crucial for fair competition. Moreover, the study calls for a reevaluation of current regulations and increased investment in technological infrastructure in developing countries to bridge the gap. This research provides a foundational understanding for future studies aimed at ensuring fairness and equity in sports technology applications.
