Abstract

Polio is a viral infection that most often develops in children under the age of 5. It damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, and in severe cases leads to paralysis of the limbs, trunk, and respiratory muscles. Before universal vaccination against polio began, thousands of children around the world were disabled and died from this disease.
