Abstract

This paper discussed the benefits of implementing effective capacity-building programmes in Nigeria's tertiary institutions. The paper is a position paper that depends on secondary data. The secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The paper concluded that the benefits of a capacity-building program for academic staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria significantly positively impact Nigeria's tertiary education sector development. The paper noted that capacity building programme implementation in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria can lead to improvement in teaching, research, community service provision skills and knowledge of academic staff. The paper also revealed that capacity building can lead to improvement in academic staff job performance in the respective institutions in Nigeria. Based on these findings, the paper recommends that private institutions and government agencies such as TETFUND must prioritise and invest in capacity-building programmes in the Nigerian tertiary institutions to improve the quality of teaching, research and community service delivery in the country. Therefore, it is essential to continue promoting and supporting these activities of capacity building in the Nigerian tertiary institutions by the stakeholders to ensure continuous growth and development in the academic community.
